Tracy and Marla
One of my favorite paintings was inspired by an amazing couple - Tracy and Marla.
Theirs is a story of loss, resilience, love, and gratitude.
First, the landscape was inspired by their trip to Emerald Lake Lodge on their 20th anniversary. It was a day when the rain, snow and sun came together in a symphony all viewed from their balcony.
Second, one of things that they value most is family and friends so I painted their very own cottage by the lake with an open door. Their home has always been the welcome place of gatherings and celebrations.
Third, while their minds are rich with memories, the loss of loved ones have left a yearning in their hearts. Many years ago, Tracy almost lost his life in a car accident and later on lost his job as a result of a long recovery. While this couple has endured pain and hardship, they didn’t let those situations define how they would live their life. They’ve decided that because tomorrow is not guaranteed, they would, instead, make conscious decisions to seize opportunities and pursue interests. In doing so, they have enriched their life as a couple and family.
It is for this reason that I painted their family as paper boats. Paper boats normally don’t float well in water due to their delicate nature, yet despite life’s fragility, they have shown resilience and grace in overcoming their own challenges. They’ve learned to thrive and move forward.
Fourth, I painted Tracy and Marla as these majestic eagles not only because of their love for country but because they are now in their 38th year of marriage - such a rarity. When I was doing my research on eagles, I came across several articles that said that eagles are believed to choose one partner for life. The eagles are looking beyond and reflecting on how good their life has been. As with every marriage, theirs came with the ups and downs. Through it all, they are grateful to have each other.
