Songs of Love and Loyalty, 2019

This piece was commissioned by two friends, Paul and Andria, for their dear friend, Billie, as a house warming present.

When I first received the order, I knew immediately that I wanted to create a piece based on their friendship. I wanted to hear from Paul and Andria what they thought of Billie in their own words. They described her beautiful spirit and character and how much she meant to them.

“Songs of Love and Loyalty” is a story of three friends with such distinct personalities, who have embraced each other’s uniqueness; shared moments of laughter and uncertainty; and built a friendship that will last for years to come. The rocks that two birds sit on represent that unyielding foundation.

One of the birds is sitting on a piece of driftwood. Despite the weathering of the stormy seas and the forces that battered this piece of wood on rocky shores, it still survives. These powerful movements in nature helped create its strong beautiful lines and smoothness on the wood’s surface. The driftwood represents Billie’s resilience and the passage of time. 

While the wine bottle represents their shared love for this delicious liquid, leaves have grown around the bottle. The leaves represented their own individual adventures yet their lives continue to weave and intertwine with one another. Long ago, they made the decision to love each other like family, thus becoming part of the same vine.

We unveiled the piece and read the narrative of the sculpture during her housewarming party. It was so rewarding seeing all their reactions.
